万圣节又来吓人了！首先，这个节日是在每天的10月31号。最初人们认为这一天死者会回到人间来转悠转悠看一看，所以，为了吓走这些鬼魂，人们怎么可怕怎么打扮。慢慢的人们胆儿越来越肥，鬼也不怕了，完全享受起这个节日来！

大家最熟悉的表达就是"trick or treat"，小孩子们在别人家门口要糖的时候会说：不给我点"小款待"我可就要捣乱了！还有其它一些相关表达在日常生活中也常用到。

Skeleton in the closet (cupboard) – to have an embarassing secret about your past, that a person tries hard to conceal. 不可告人的秘密
例句：
有一句话叫"Every family has a skeleton in the cupboard"，谁家都有不想说出去的秘密，也就是咱们说的家丑吧，就像被藏在柜子里的一副骨架一样。

A ghost town – abandoned place (village, town or city) where nobody lives. （无人居住的）鬼城，废都
例句：
It turned into a ghost town after the mining company left.
矿业公司走后这里就成了一座无人居住的废都。

In cold blood – to do something deliberately in a ruthless manner, never give it a thought
冷血地，残酷地，无情地
例句：
A man has killed a kitten in cold blood.
这个冷血的人眼睛都不眨地杀死了一只小猫。

To make someone’s blood boil – to make someone very angry
让别人气得热血沸腾
例句：
That movie made my blood boil. How could anyone's blood be so cold?!
那个电影看得我快气死了！怎么有人能那么冷血呢？

Put/stick the knife in – to do something unkind or unpleasant to someone, particularly when they are weak
在别人本来就无助柔弱的时候伤人
例句：Every time he applied for a job, someone put the knife in and made sure Jack'sbackground became known.
每次他去申请工作，总有人揭他过去的短，狠狠捅他一刀。

Smell a rat – to suspect that something is wrong or something dishonest is happening
感到不妙
例句：
The minute I came in, I smelled a rat. Sure enough, I had been robbed.
我一进门就感到不妙。还真是，家里被盗了！

Scared stiff – to get so scared that you are not able to move
吓呆了！吓得肌肉都僵了。
例句：
I was scared stiff when I heard noises in my house last night.
昨晚我听到那个奇怪的声音简直吓呆了。

Witch-hunt – a campaign against a person or group who have different or unpopular views 政治迫害，为消灭意见不同的人而展开的清理
例句：
There was a lot of witch-hunting in the ruling party at that time.
那个时候政党里又很多政治清理迫害活动。

Not a cat in hell’s chance – no chance at all 完全没戏
例句：
Jack didn’t have a cat in hell’s chance of winning the race.
杰克完全没可能赢这场比赛。

Scare the pants off someone – to really scare someone 吓尿了！
例句：
You scared the pants off me, I thought you were outside.
艾玛你吓死我了！我还以为你在外头呢！

death trap － a building or other structure that is dangerous
危险的建筑或结构，死亡陷阱
例句：
That old roller coaster is a death trap. It will collapse one day if they don’t fix it.
那个老的过山车简直就是一个死亡陷阱啊！再不修理肯定会塌的。

witching hour － midnight 半夜
例句：
We stay up till the witching hour every year on Halloween night.
我们每个万圣节都会到半夜才睡。

blind as a bat － not able to see well
弱视，像蝙蝠一样看不清
例句：
How could you be driving without your glasses? You're blind as a bat!
你怎么开车不戴眼睛啊？你都瞎成这样了！
