China will expand the scope of legal aid in a bid to protect the rights of vulnerable groups, a senior official at the Ministry of Justice said.
Ministry figures show that, since 2003, national legal aid departments concluded 7.5 million cases and offered aid to more than 9 million people.
Currently, 3,700 legal aid centers have been set up across the country, with 14,000 lawyers offering free legal services such as consultation, representation in criminal cases or mediating civil disputes.

相关数据显示，自2003年起，全国各级法律援助部门办理援助案件750万起，受援助人数超过900万。

文中的legal aid就是“法律援助”的意思，其中aid作名词，意为“援助，救援”，多指向个人或团体提供急需的援助，如：effective aid （有效的援助），emergency aid （紧急援助）；而help含义广泛，指一般性的物质、精神帮助，如：We'll need outside help before we can finish.（我们需要外界援助才能完成。）
