According to Chinese mythology, the earth once had 10 suns circling over it. One day, all 10 suns appeared together, scorching the earth with their heat. An immortal gave him a pouch of pills of eternity as a token of gratitude on behalf of the people he had saved. With the pills，he could become an immortal himself and be able to ascend to heaven. However, Chang E swallowed the pills up and as result flew to the moon.Thus started the legend of the lady in the moon to whom young Chinese girls would pray at the Mid-Autumn Festival.
