暑假一天到晚没事儿干，就写了挺多fan theory。这个是关于神奇动物2片尾的astonishing reveal：Credence其实是Aurelius Dumbledore.

At the end of Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald, Grindelwald revealed that Credence Barebone’s real identity was Aurelius Dumbledore and his own brother “seeks to destroy” him. Of course, he could have been lying, but for the phoenix by Credence’s side in this scene. We know that Dumbledore once said that “a phoenix will come to a Dumbledore in need”. Marketing-wise, this film would have been completely useless and skippable if Grindelwald was lying.

But how can Credence be a Dumbledore at all? Before FB2, we know that Albus only had two siblings, Aberforth and Ariana. He’s never mentioned another brother throughout the seven HP books and the two FB movies. So either he didn’t know about Aurelius or he’s a really good actor.

Let’s consider the timeline. According to Pottermore, Albus Dumbledore was born in 1881, his sister Ariana was born in 1885. Their mother Kendra died in 1899, and Ariana died in 1899. Had Aurelius been the son of Kendra or Ariana, the youngest he could be in 1927 is if he was born in 1899. All of this works, except it doesn’t. Thanks to the published original screenplay written by J.K. Rowling, it clearly states that the sinking of the ship to the US happened in 1901. If Aurelius was the child of either Kendra or Ariana, he would not still be an infant in 1901.

Another thing I found out while reading the book is that the dark-haired woman who carried baby Credence without realizing the baby has been swapped is Credence’s aunt. If Aurelius was the son of Albus, Aberforth, or Ariana, he would have a living aunt. However, in a new edition of The Tales of Beedle the Bard, Dumbledore mentions an aunt called Honoria. If the aunt the screenplay was referring to was Honoria, it means that Aurelius’s father was Percival Dumbledore.

The only problem with this theory is that Percival has been imprisoned in Azkaban since 1891 after the incident with the muggle boys who attacked Ariana. The only way for him to have children is for the mother to be someone who was in Azkaban at the time. My theory is that Percival Dumbledore conceived a child with a woman in Azkaban with him, and he sent Aurelius to America with his aunt to escape from the British Ministry of Magic.

The question is, who was the woman? For some reason, I had a gut feeling Credence was related to Voldemort. Voldemort was born in 1926, which means Morfin and Merope Gaunt we’re both too young in 1901 to have children. However, on my search for Voldemort’s grandmother on his mother side, I was unsuccessful in finding any information. On the Pottermore website’s Gaunt Family Tree, they had neglected to put anything on there about Marvolo Gaunt’s wife (in other instances like this, when someone’s information is unclear, they would put up the person’s family name or simply “unknown”). In this case, I strongly suspect there is more to it. What better explanation to this than for Mrs. Gaunt to be in Azkaban at the same time as Percival Dumbledore? Because inbreeding is the Gaunt’s tradition, there would be no love or passion between Marvolo and his wife, which makes it all the more likely that she later fell in love with Percival.

Last but not least, in FB1, Percival Graves, Gellert Grindelwald In disguise, was somewhat of a father-figure for Credence. It could have been Grindelwald’s inspiration for his fake name, or a hidden metaphor cleverly designed by J.K. Rowling, a foreshadow for the end of FB2, another Easter-egg for fans.
